Embroidered Kashmiri Pherans: Choosing the best

An ages old cultural attire of Kashmir, unique and pleasing to every eye, “Pheran” has been gracing every Kashmiri household since before the 15th century. It was proudly worn by both Hindu and Muslim families of Kashmir, representing their identity. Pheran being the most cherished garment is adorned by men, women, children alike, its aura unparalleled!
Many across the country and even abroad have embraced this rich cultural outfit mainly made of materials like Cotton, Raffal wool, Pashmina wool, Jamewar and Cashmilon. The classic, simple yet elegant style of pheran, with detailed embroidery of eye catching colours and patterns, defines Kashmir’s artistic legacy and rich culture.

History and Evolution Of Pheran Over Centuries:
While some say that Pheran was introduced by Mughal emperor Akbar when he conquered the valley, many historians have revealed that the Kashmiris adapted such long robes and round turbans with the arrival of sufi saints and muslim theologians from Persia and Central Asia. The whole valley embraced it with honour.
The traditional pheran extends to the feet with two gowns one over other, in which a lighter gown (called “pootx”) was worn below the original pheran in order to prevent it from extra heat and burns from Kangri, also providing extra heat in the chilling winter days of Kashmir.
As the centuries were passing by, the length of pheran reduced to below the knees. Additionally, in the later part of the 19th century, these traditional pherans were worn with a lower garment or Suthans/ shalwars, which remained quite popular for a long period of its history.
A typical Pheran is supposed to be a loose garment, as it’s worn like a gown, over the layers of clothing in winter. And for the people to be comfortable enough to move and sit while holding the traditional Kangri (fire pot) inside their Pheran, it needs to have a decent loose fit with wide sleeves. But as of today, since Pheran has made its way beyond Kashmir and is worn in all seasons, it is made in all sizes according to one’s comfort. Thus the pherans of this era have evolved to the modern grace in their style while retaining their traditional essence, the originality, and remaining true to their roots. Be it long or short, loose or tight fit, embroidered or plain, Pheran has been weaving magic through the threads of its uniqueness.
